What made you want to DJ? After growing up round the early 90’s scene I always wanted to carry on the party back at home and with a few mates already DJing the natural progression was from sticking on a tape on to getting a pair of belt drive decks to keep the party going on DIY Wadd style. Plus I’m a crap dancer so it makes sense!
What was the first track you bought specifically to DJ with? Joey Beltram’s Energy Flash. Detroit Techno at its finest!
Everybody wants to be a DJ these days. What ignites your passion to continue, despite the competitiveness within club culture? In a congested environment that we have today we have a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon and making a fast buck from our scene. And some of the music that is being released is showing that! I feel I have a duty to educate & share the past, future & hidden classic tracks/artists that need recognition for their merits. And there’s no better place than here on D3EP where you can hear this!
If you could go back in time and be involved in the club scene of any era, when would this be and why? Due to my age I just missed out on the acid house scene with the summer of love in 88 and all that (Gutted). But I think if I’m pushed I would probably go back further to the late 70’s early 80’s. Levan’s Paradise Garage, Mancuso’s Loft, Hardy’s Musik Box or Knuckles Warehouse. These guys really started the whole ball rolling.
Who would be your dream guest on your show? Scarlett Johansson please? Eh? Err alright yeah not that kind of guest! I would love to have Masters at Work. Back catalogue of highest quality & pioneers of the house scene.
If you could go B2B with any DJ on the planet, who would it be and where? Wow. I would say Kerri Chandler. The guys an absolute legend in my eyes. Would probably get stage fright tho! If that was the case I would plump for my bro Jon Willard. Been playing B2B with him from years. Feel like we really hit off each other style when playing together. Its one of those things that feels natural when playing B2B with him.
What was the last tune that was stuck in your head before this interview? ‘I Am’ Sol Brown Ft Nicole Mitchell.
If you could have made any of the the records you have played which one would it be and why? ‘Strings of Life’ Rhythim Is Rhythim. It amazes me every time I put it on the player to this day. Still sounds so fresh & original. If I had made that I could be happy and retire from producing for that masterpiece.
What’s your musical guilty pleasure? – Don’t be shy 😉 I have turned into a bit of a music snob over the years. But I did grow up in the 80’s so I do have some music faux pas. Sucker for a bit of Kate Bush & ELO.
If you could only listen to the same 5 records for the rest of your life, what would they be? Gotta be greedy and pick 5 Long Players…………….
1.Massive Attack – Blue Lines
2.Stevie Wonder – Inversions
3.Daft Punk – Homework
4.Prince – Purple Rain
5.Nuyorican Soul – Nuyorican Soul
Get up or Get Down? Get Down!
Too Hot or Too Cold? Too Hot!
